Worried about Jean
|
Hi All, Like everyone, I'm very anxious about Jean Le Cam till he is safely on a rescue craft and heading for land. Sounds like he will be down below, having set off his EPIRB, perhaps with a keel failure causing the problem, we have no idea till a plane goes over to check. Thankfully he is near the excellent navy resources of Chile, and a ship will be there shortly. In fact, as I write this, I was called up by the Vendee radio in Paris, and they said that the tanker is hove to 300 metres away and the boat is upside down. Good news is that the second EPIRB has been set off so Jean must be inside. It is a strange feeling being very worried for your fellow sailor and for their families, and being in a very similar carbon craft, sailing in very similar seas and wind. I am certainly thinking about whether I am totally prepared for such an emergency, and there are some jobs I will be doing today to make things more secure below. Otherwise, quite reasonable sailing conditions, 25 – 30 knots of wind running and I will need to gybe to the NE in a few hours for the final ice gate, which is now just 500 miles away. The sun came out for a few hours yesterday, which was a welcome change. A grey dawn just arriving and the boat is going along well, just put aft ballast in as wind increasing (against the forecast) and might put in another reef if trend continues. Focused on getting round the Horn and into the Atlantic, the home straight. 2200 miles to go now. Brian
